One of the great things about living in the Okanagan is getting all four seasons. Right now, that means cooler days, changing leaves and a very cozy kitchen – candles lit, something baking and a simmer pot on the go.

August was a quieter month, with 9.4% fewer sales than last year. Single-family prices held steady, while townhouse and condo prices came in lower than last August. When fewer homes are selling, the details matter more: how a home is priced, how it shows, and what it’s up against. The most useful comparison is still homes like yours, in your neighbourhood.

Harvest tastings and winemaker dinners at wineries up and down the valley.

Fall Fest at Paynter’s

Pumpkin painting, the pumpkin patch and a small market on Paynter Road, 10 am–3 pm. Free.

Nuit Blanche

Free art, performances and a silent disco around downtown Kelowna, starting at 6 pm.

October 15 – 18

Okanagan International Film Festival

A brand-new film festival, with screenings around the Okanagan.

Worth knowing

West Kelowna votes Saturday, October 17. Advance voting is at City Hall on October 7, 13 and 15, and mail ballots are available now.

Lately

Baking up a storm.

I’ve been working my way through some older cookbooks lately. This one was a hit – I’ve made it twice this week.

My mini crockpot has been doing double duty as a simmer pot. It makes the whole house smell delicious.

Simmer pot

1/2 orange, sliced

1/4 cup cranberries

2 cinnamon sticks

1 tsp whole cloves

1 tsp vanilla

Water to cover

Leave it on low, and top up the water every few hours.
